Why cleaning matters

General principles
In general, a probe should be cleaned after every patient, following the manufacturer's instructions for that exact model, and the cleaning method should match the probe type: a surface probe and an endocavitary probe have different requirements, and a waterproof rating does not by itself mean a probe can be immersed. Cables, connectors and the probe housing should be inspected for cracks or damage, because damage can harbour contamination and can let fluid reach internal parts. Before introducing a probe into a clinic, confirm the cleaning and disinfection instructions, the compatible agents and the reprocessing workflow for that model in writing, and make sure the staff who will use it are trained in that workflow.
