What Is Handheld Ultrasound?
What is handheld ultrasound? A definition: a compact wireless probe, a phone or tablet display, and an app.
Definition
Handheld ultrasound is ultrasound imaging performed with a compact, hand-carried probe that pairs with a phone, tablet or computer, instead of a large cart-based machine. The system has three parts: the probe itself, which sends and receives ultrasound signals; the display device, which is usually a phone or tablet; and the app, which controls the probe, shows the image and stores it. In the range described on this site, the probe is wireless, carries its own battery, and sends images over WiFi, in some models also over USB, to the display device running the free MY USG app, with images saved in JPG, PNG, MP4 and DICOM formats.
How it differs from a cart-based system
A cart-based ultrasound machine offers a larger screen, more processing power, more probe options and usually more measurement tools, and it is the right choice for a full imaging department. A handheld device trades some of that capability for portability, lower cost and bedside availability. It is used where the question is immediate and specific, where the patient cannot easily be moved, or where a second device is needed alongside a main machine. A handheld device does not replace a departmental machine for every examination, and a finding that needs a full study should be referred for one. For a comparison of handheld probes and portable machines in general terms, see the comparison page.
