Wireless vs Wired Ultrasound Probe
Wireless vs wired ultrasound probe: WiFi and USB connectivity compared, based on published connection types.
What wireless means here
In the range described on this site, wireless means that the probe carries its own battery and sends images over WiFi to a phone, tablet or computer, without a cable between the probe and the display. Some models add a USB connection as well, which can be used for charging, for a wired image connection, or for both, depending on the model. A wired connection in the traditional sense, where the probe is permanently cabled to a console, is not how these handheld probes work: even the models with USB are primarily wireless devices that happen to offer USB as an additional option.
Trade-offs
Wireless operation gives freedom of movement and a familiar display, which suits bedside, clinic and field use. Its trade-offs are battery management, WiFi pairing and interference, and the need to keep the display device charged and updated. A USB connection can help where WiFi is congested or where a stable connection is preferred, and it also provides a charging route. A buyer should confirm for the exact model whether USB is offered, what it is used for, and how the probe behaves when the battery is low, because those details differ between models and are not the same across the range.
